Since I didn’t get much response to Clumsy, and because I am having a decidedly musical week, albeit difficult, I thought that I’d take a stab at boring you with my all time favorite aria: Habanera from Georges Bizet’s Carmen. This is actually one of several “out of the box” tracks that resides on my mp3 player and occasionally accompanies my morning walk or a grand dance around the kitchen. It’s a wildly popular piece with which nearly everyone is acquainted. Why just last evening I had Drama Queen running about in her baby blue Carter’s sleeper belting out her own version of this masterpiece along with me! A two year old Carmen in the making! Ha! I only wish I had caught it on film.
How does one stretch the imagination to seriously and viscerally enjoy everything from Fergie to THIS, you may ask? One has only to turn to the ever profound inspiration for them both… LOVE! Fergie’s? Self-explanatory. Carmen’s? If you don’t already know it, have a gander at the translation here. She is one kick-ass purveyor of the love bug!
And for those who are on the ass-kicked end of the spectrum, there’s always another favorite aria of mine: Caro Mio Ben. Cecilia Bartoli’s is fabulous!
I LOVE Carmen! Like you, I like everything from Jojo (you GOTTA buy “Too Little Too Late” if you don’t have it) to madrigals to techno pop (the band Stars rocks my world). I’m glad you wrote about music; I’ve been thinking it alot recently. I accidentally subscribed to Rolling Stone (don’t ask) and was irritated I kept getting a big tome EVERY WEEK… until I actually read it and realized
a) they have good articles on general issues and politics
b) they have good features on musicians and
c) they’re recommending new artists, which I need.
As an adult, I find that no one ever talks about great new bands and songs. I have my hip friends in NYC, but reading the advice of pros (I actually discovered Stars in an article by the NYTImes) is awesome. And, now that Tower Records in Stamford closed, there’s nowhere to browse! They had those awesome listening stations…
