Flaunt It Friday: Guilty Pleasures

12.07.07 | 14 Comments

Let’s face it. Each of us does things she is ashamed of or, at the very least, things of which she is not proud. Every woman at some point in time (or maybe on a regular basis) does something for which she feels downright guilty. Being the more emotionally harmonized of the sexes, we are simply wired that way.

However subtle the foreboden activity to which this or that woman falls prey may be, deep down every woman knows that she probably, no definitely SHOULD NOT be engaging in it.  Most likely, in fact, by doing the very thing she shouldn’t be doing she is doing herself some injustice or harming herself in some way, shape or form.  Insomuch as it is self-destructive or sabotaging on some level, and she knows it, she struggles with latent feelings of guilt whenever confronted with and subsequently succumbing to this something.

We are all human, and are, as such, more complicated than even the very guilt which attempts to direct our choices. Guilt alone however is simply not enough to shift us into rational overdrive and send us speeding in the other direction when faced with that something we shouldn’t be doing.  In other words, guilt doesn’t stop us from sometimes making self-destructive choices. We choose to do what’s “bad” for us because, despite the moral outrage that it solicits within, it feels so good! Whoa!  So while we feel the guilt, we simply do not feel guilty enough to stop doing what we are doing.  We’re just not feeling guilty enough to cease and desist.  Hence, the term “guilty pleasures”.

This week’s Flaunt It Friday challenge: What’s your top guilty pleasure?

At the risk of losing my already very few readers who may be disgusted by me flaunting my guilty pleasure, here’s mine.

I am an avid viewer of the FX Network’s Series NIP/TUCK! Oh yeah, I wouldn’t go as far as to blaspheme and claim that Tuesday nights are “sacred” but you can bet your bottom dollar that themommykelly is working hard on an early bedtime for the girls and a quick shower every Tuesday night before the clock strikes ten! Because, in all reality, this is the one and only hour of television that I watch all week long!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show here’s the link again.  Suffice to say that it’s all about two hugely sexy plastic surgeons (previously living in Miami, now LA) who lead very racy and intricately invented lives. More power to the writers! It consists mainly of the following: plastic surgery consults and operations (I cannot for the life of me watch the actual surgery!), murder, sex, sex and more sex, (borderline soft porn), vulgar language and a peek into the darker side of some seriously effed up peoples’ lives. Yes, it makes for interesting stuff.

Now, before you hop up on your high horse and preach (in stereo with Hubby) about how I am indirectly contributing to the sickness of the world by shamelessly participating in this kind of smut however passively as a viewer, let me say this in my own defense.  If I enjoy watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, does that mean that I condone slaughtering human beings with chainsaws and the like? Apply the same philosophical principle to my favorite show.

After all, there are inklings of morals in this show… (ok, not really but I like to pretend there are.) It’s all in the characters. Doctor McNamara does in earnest try to have a conscience, but usually fails. Doctor Troy doesn’t try at all, but I don’t know about this season, a few episodes back that nun almost converted him! (Totally unrealistic nun, by the way. Who the hell ever heard of a nun having a breast reduction in the name of her apostolate? Just sick! ) All in all I’d be more than happy to put in some serious time converting those there hottie doctors!

Alright. Enough. Let me end this here before this week’s challenge gets totally out of control!

I am so looking forward to all your posts!
