This week’s Flaunt It Friday challenge requires a bit of digging deep somewhere into the far distant past: your childhood. Yes, ladies, let’s have a chat and perhaps a laugh or two about your favorite childhood shows. Hubby’s Popeye shenanigans are entirely to blame, so feel free to pin the ridiculousness of it all on him.
Now, if you are in your late thirties, you’ll remember very clearly that you were the part and participant, albeit passive, among very first experimental groups of children who were exposed to “educational” television. The public service channel’s movement to somehow morph programming into being useful and good in addition to entertaining was thrust upon children everywhere with all the vigor and enthusiasm that the pilot Sesame Street characters, Mr. Rogers, Romper Room and the Zoom kids could muster up.
Yes, the seventies were a time of great change in television. Yet, if you are part of my group, then you’ll remember enjoying a good dose of kiddie targeted crap too! Loonie Toones (of which my brother knows every episode by heart) were ever in the forefront of the magnificent menu of cartoon garbage, trailed closely by Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker and Popeye. While I must admit being an avid fan of them all, they are not my favorites. Oh no!
There is a special place in my memories for merely one children’s program from those wonder years: The Magic Garden. I loved it so! So much so, that from time to time, when I’m in a pretty damn freaky mood, I still find myself singing with Paula and Carole to the tune of the “Hello Song.” I am also sure that no one remembers the Chuckle Patch or the Storybox as well as I do. Yes, these contributed to my childhood development. In what way? I’m not sure. Have a look see for yourselves! Perhaps you can help me figure it out! Ha.
Now it’s your turn, darlin’. What did you watch as a kid?

I guess I am too young (27) to know that show, but I remember most you mentioned. I was going to talk about Woody Woodpecker, I used to watch it every morning before school!
And my mom was on Romper room when she was little, how fun!
By the way..I love that you gave us the topic a day ahead, I was able to mull it over!!
I loved the Magic Graden too!! Here’s the sad part - the show doesn’t play in England and I didn’t get to the states until I was 12. How sad am I?
Hmmm—I guess I’m too young, too (28). I’ve already done my post—but after reading yours, I remembered the Wonder Years!! I loved that show, too!!
This was a nice trip down memory lane! Although a lot of these shows didn’t play here.
I remember watching Popeye re-runs though as a kiddo.
The Banana Splits. Tra-la-la, baby!
better late than never. great topic!!
